Course Description: Overview of linguistic diversity of Brazil, current practices in the maintenance and revitalization of languages and strategies for empowering indigenous peoples. Linguistic properties of Brazilian languages; introduction to language description by working on small data sets; discussion of the influence of Brazilian indigenous languages on Brazilian Portuguese. Taught in English. (Offered in alternate years.)
